SJAL: The South Jersey Area Local awards four (4) Seven Hundred Fifty Dollars ($750) Scholarships to our Member's son or daughter who graduate high school each year in which the scholarships are awarded.
Contact Kate McAllister at the Blackwood Office (856) 228-8090 for rules and application. Applications must be postmarked no later than May 15th of the year in which the student applying for the scholarship graduates.
National APWU: Starting in 2010, The E.C. Hallbeck Memorial Scholarship will award $8000 ($2000 annually) to ten recipients (one male and one female from each of the five postal regions) to apply towards their four-year college tuition.
Vocational Scholarship winners will receive up to $3,000 ($1000 annually) for specialized training in, for example, culinary arts, medical or dental assistant, electrician, real estate, auto mechanic, certified IT/computer education, cosmetology, or massage therapy, etc. Eligible programs can be of a nine-month to three-year duration.
The scholarships are open only to high school seniors. Applicants may apply for only either Hallbeck or Vocational, not both.

APWU Accident Benefit Plan
All APWU members are eligible to enroll with the American Postal Workers Accident Benefit Association in their Low Option or High Option plan. This plan pays a daily benefit to you for each day you are disabled from a covered accident (on the job, off the job, anytime, all the time).
You can increase your benefits to High Option for a very small additional fee. Coverage is also available for your spouse, for a small fee.
An Accidental Death Benefit available only to ABA members as a supplement to your present ABA benefits Rates are guaranteed...regardless of age. This plan provides the maximum amount of benefits at the lowest possible cost...compare these rates with any other program. Any ABA Member subscribing to this plan while in active postal service can continue this benefit when they retire as long as they maintain their basis ABA membership. (Present retirees are not eligible for this supplemental benefit...but the ABA hopes to include present retirees in the near future.)
You can apply for any of three ABA Plus plans:
- $50,000 Accidental Death Benefit at a cost of 60 cents per pay period.
- $75,000 Accidental Death Benefit at a cost of 85 cents per pay period
- $100,000 Accidental Death Benefit at a cost of $1.10 per pay period.
Spouses are also eligible for this benefit but are limited to $50,000 of supplemental coverage.
